What is an annual report?
All publicly traded companies are required by the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) in the United States to publish certain financial data annually.
Most other countries have similar organisations to look after this, such as ASIC (Australian Securities and Investments Commission) for Australia.
The annual report is a publication that is distributed by these publicly traded companies to their shareholders which covers the previous year’s proceedings.
Some of the common sections covered in annual reports are:
Letter from the chairman (or CEO) to the shareholders
Financial Highlights
Balance Sheets
Auditor’s report on corporate governance
Profit and Loss Statements
New Business
Year in Review
Projections
Outstanding Shares of Stock and Complete list of Board Members
Income statement
Corporate governance
Mission statement
CEO’s report
Chairman’s report
Annual Reports are a great way to familiarise yourself with a company before you invest, because this information is audited and required by the SEC, ASIC or equivalent local government agency.
